ABOUT THE WORK

Syotatsu’s artistic practice centers on a deep connection between the land, materials, and spirit. Working from his studio in the mountains of Wakayama, he creates paintings that blur the line between abstraction and figuration, guided by nature’s rhythms and spiritual presence.

He uses natural and reclaimed materials—such as soil from around his home, indigo, soot, charcoal, and vintage fabrics—allowing the environment itself to shape each work. Sometimes he buries or weathers his pieces outdoors so that time, rain, and wind leave their mark.

His process is both meditative and collaborative with nature: the earth is not just his subject but his medium. Through this approach, Syotatsu seeks to express the unseen spiritual energy of the landscape and the interconnectedness between humans and the natural world.
