Bagus Pecut Sumantri (b. 1982, Weleri, Kendal) has enjoyed painting since childhood, influenced by his father, a fine arts teacher. His artistic development has been largely self-taught. He had the opportunity to further his education at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, where he majored in Philosophy, and at Ahmad Dahlan University, where he pursued a degree in Psychology.

Approximately a decade ago, Sumantri began to take exhibitions seriously, showcasing his work both domestically and internationally, as well as participating in various art fairs throughout Indonesia.

For Sumantri, painting serves as a means to momentarily halt the passage of time. He expresses a desire to negotiate with time, acknowledging the universal challenge of its relentless forward movement. This notion of halting time fascinates him during the painting process, allowing him to encapsulate emotions and experiences in a specific manner. He aims to create a space within his art where this spiritual journey is paramount—what he refers to as “Jeda”. Ultimately, Bagus Pecut Sumantri seeks to paint his personal visions and to manifest in his artwork only that which he wishes to see.
