ABOUT THE WORK

This painting is an extended reverie, an imagined continuation of a moment. One day in 1888, amid a so called great nation where colonialists constructed their ancient projections, the Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij set sail on an inter island voyage. From the allure of Andalas, to the splendor of Java, to Bali, celebrated through Western Orientalist narratives, each place shimmered with myth and promise.

When the colonial ships had long since anchored, did the voyage truly end? Or did it transform into an unceasing stream of tourism, carrying global expectations to the very same shores? The sea remains a space of circulation, now transporting not only commodities, but experiences.
